Russia Steps In to Support Mali Amid Nationwide Fuel Shortages

912

Russia has begun providing direct support to Mali as the country struggles with fuel shortages that have disrupted transport, power supply and economic activities. The assistance includes securing fuel convoys along major routes, according to Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Moscow’s involvement is facilitated through the Russian African Defence Corps, which operates at the request of the Malian authorities. Officials say the support focuses on reinforcing security along key transport corridors where fuel trucks have previously faced threats from armed groups.

Security measures include the establishment of new checkpoints, aerial and ground escorts for convoys and targeted reconnaissance operations to identify risks along the routes. The goal is to ensure the uninterrupted flow of fuel into the country, as shortages continue to impact daily life.

The initiative reflects the deepening partnership between Bamako and Moscow, which has expanded military and logistical cooperation in recent years. Malian officials say the collaboration is critical to stabilising supply chains and restoring access to essential fuel across the country.
