Mali Suspends Teaching of the French Revolution in 9th Grade Curriculum

1.5k

The Malian Ministry of National Education has announced the suspension of the French Revolution from the 9th-grade history curriculum. The directive, issued on October 9, 2025, calls for immediately withdrawing the 1789 Revolution lesson from all classrooms nationwide.

While the ministry did not specify the reasons behind the decision, the move signals a broader shift in Mali’s educational focus as the country continues efforts to revise its curriculum to reflect national values and historical priorities better.

Education officials say the reform process aims to strengthen the teaching of local and African history, aligning classroom content with Mali’s current vision of cultural and intellectual sovereignty.
