Niger is hosting a key diplomatic event today as Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, President of the Republic of Chad, arrives in Niamey for a two-day working visit. The visit, which will last 48 hours, will significantly strengthen bilateral ties between neighbouring Sahelian nations.

President Déby Itno was welcomed with full honours by Nigerien authorities at Niamey’s Diori Hamani International Airport. His visit comes at a critical time for the region, which continues to face mounting security threats from jihadist insurgencies and pressing economic challenges that require coordinated regional responses.

According to official sources, the working visit will include high-level meetings between President Déby Itno and the Niger Authorities, as well as sessions involving key ministers and security officials from both countries. Topics include joint strategies to combat terrorism in the Lake Chad Basin, border security cooperation, trade facilitation, and broader economic partnerships.

This visit underscores the growing importance of regional solidarity and diplomatic engagement as both countries navigate a complex geopolitical environment. The visit is expected to conclude on Friday, August 8, with a joint communiqué outlining the key outcomes and agreements reached during the talks.
