Nigeria: Sokoto Govt Says It’s Ready to Dialogue with Armed Groups, Bandits to Curb Insecurity

The Sokoto State Government is committed to restoring peace and security by announcing its readiness to engage in dialogue with armed groups willing to lay down their weapons and embrace reconciliation.

In a statement released on Wednesday and signed by the Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu on Security, Colonel Ahmed Usman (rtd), the state government emphasised that negotiation is often more effective than prolonged conflict, citing historical examples where lasting peace was achieved through dialogue rather than force.

Many historical conflicts have not ended solely through the use of force, but through meaningful dialogue, the statement read. Sokoto State is open to negotiating with bandits who demonstrate a genuine commitment to surrender and reintegrate peacefully into society.

The statement comes amid ongoing regional insecurity, including violent attacks and criminal activities in forested areas.

Also, the Sokoto State Government welcomed the federal government’s proposed deployment of forest guards across the region but cautioned that transparency, integrity, and community trust must guide recruitment.

The state also recommended strict supervision of forest guards by conventional security agencies to ensure accountability and prevent any potential abuse of power. It further emphasised that effective communication between forest guards and local communities will be crucial in building trust and gaining public support.

Reiterating its stance, the government declared its unwavering support for all peace building initiatives, stressing that the administration will spare no effort or resources to protect the lives and property of its citizens.
