Niger Army Arrests Militants in Counter-Terrorism Operation in Tillaberi Region

263

The Nigerien Armed Forces have successfully carried out a major counter-terrorism operation in the western Tillaberi region, a hotspot of growing jihadist activity in recent years. Several individuals suspected of links to radical groups were arrested during the special operation.

Military officials confirmed that the mission was part of a broader government effort to reinforce national security and counter the persistent threat of terrorism, particularly in areas bordering Mali and Burkina Faso, where extremist violence has surged.

Authorities have not released the identities or affiliations of those detained. However, sources indicate the suspects are believed to have ties to groups responsible for recent attacks on villages and military outposts in the region.

Tillaberi, which lies in Niger’s tri-border area, has been one of the regions most affected by jihadist violence, with civilians and security forces frequently targeted by armed insurgents. The government has been under mounting pressure to address the deteriorating security conditions and has stepped up military operations recently.

Nigerien officials emphasised the need for continued vigilance and coordination among regional partners to counter the threat effectively.
