Ghana and Morocco to waive visa

Ghana and Morocco have agreed to waive visa requirements for all travellers between the two countries. The agreement is expected to be presented to both parliaments for ratification in the coming weeks.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the decision after talks with Morocco’s Ambassador to Ghana, Imane Ouaadil. He said both countries had also committed to strengthening cooperation in agribusiness, tourism, and security.

I have held fruitful and assuring discussions with the Moroccan Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Imane Ouaadil. Morocco and Ghana have also agreed to initiate a visa waiver agreement for all categories of travellers from both countries. The agreement will be presented to our parliaments for ratification shortly,” he said.

Ablakwa also addressed concerns over social media claims about violence against Africans in Morocco. He said the ambassador refuted reports that 700 Africans had been killed, clarifying that the widely circulated video was from a “24th June 2022 border incident which led to the tragic, unfortunate, and condemnable loss of 23 lives.”

“She has assured that Ghanaians and all Africans living in Morocco are safe contrary to the widely circulated videos on social media falsely claiming that some 700 Africans are being massacred.

Apparently, the footage in issue is an old 24th June, 2022 border incident which led to the tragic, unfortunate and condemnable loss of 23 lives. That deplorable incident has since been investigated by Moroccan and Spanish authorities. It is worth noting that no Ghanaian casualty was recorded”, the Foreign Minister added.

As part of efforts to strengthen ties, Morocco has also decided to increase its annual scholarships for Ghanaian students. According to Ablakwa, the number has doubled from 90 to 180 this year. In a separate meeting, he met with Russia’s Ambassador to Ghana, Sergei Berdnikov, to discuss bilateral cooperation. The meeting, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focused on improving ties between Ghana and Russia.
