Niger Signs Partnership Agreement with International Atomic Energy Agency for Water Resource Management

Niger and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have signed a significant partnership agreement aimed at modernising the country’s infrastructure and enhancing its capacity for effective water resource management. A partnership that is seen as a vital step in strengthening Niger’s ability to manage its water resources and fully harness its potential in this critical area.

The agreement, which was formalised in Niamey on March 13, outlines plans for creating a reference laboratory, renovating seven regional laboratories, and training Nigerien specialists in water quality management and pollution control.

The agreement was signed by Colonel Maïzama Abdoulaye, Minister of Hydraulics, Sanitation, and Environment, and Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the IAEA, who has been visiting Niger since March 11.

The IAEA’s support comes at a pivotal time for Niger as the country seeks to diversify its international partnerships. As part of the agreement, the IAEA has committed to providing ongoing assistance to Niger in nuclear safety, as well as in the sustainable management of the country’s natural resources.

According to the report, days before the agreement was signed, Director General Grossi visited the SOMAÏR uranium mine in Arlit, an area of significant strategic importance for Niger, which was recently impacted by operational disruptions.

In December 2024, the French nuclear giant ORANO lost control of operations at the mine and was subsequently taken over by Niger Authorities. Grossi noted that, despite the challenges, “the management is professional, and there is a real desire for transparency and collaboration with the IAEA.”

He also highlighted Niger’s critical role in the global uranium market, showing the country’s importance as a key player in the energy sector.
