Burkina Faso has launched the construction of 55 municipal medical centres and five intensive care units as part of the Presidential Health Initiative (IPS), Maliweb reported.

The launching ceremony occurred on Friday in Bérégadougou, a commune in the Cascades region.

The IPS initiative was officially adopted last July during the president’s Council of Ministers meeting to expand healthcare infrastructure and enhance medical services.

According to IPS coordinator Drissa Traoré, the project is of “strategic” importance for improving access to healthcare nationwide.

By the end of 2025, the initiative plans to establish around 20 municipal medical centres, two dialysis units, five resuscitation blocks, a heart institute, and breast cancer diagnostic tools. The project also includes equipping specialised services and reinforcing medical staff.

However, according to the Minister of Health, Robert Kargougou, Burkina Faso’s healthcare system continues to face challenges such as high mortality rates, the implementation of universal health insurance, and the need for improved infrastructure and resource management.

The construction comes six months after the Burkina Faso government donated 15 equipped mobile care units and cold chain equipment to the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene.

My vision is to allow the brave people of Burkina Faso access to specialised health care and health structures to guarantee the quality of vaccines at all levels of our health system through good conservation, President Traore had stated.

Health Minister Kargougou noted that mobile clinics deployed have already had a positive impact, raising awareness of women’s cancers among 1.9 million women and screening over 84,000 for precancerous lesions.
