IGP Kayode Egbetokun Names Publicly Funded Gym After Himself, Checks Bucket List

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has named a newly constructed gymnasium, funded with public resources, after himself. The facility, located within the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Garki, Abuja, was commissioned on the 4th of September 2024.

The fitness centre, now officially called the “Egbetokun Wellness and Fitness Center”, has an array of modern equipment, including treadmills, elliptical machines, weightlifting stations, and a specialised yoga room. Notably, the facility is equipped with reinforced burglary-proof doors and windows.

The facility’s unveiling has drawn mixed reactions, with critics accusing the IGP of self-aggrandisement by naming a public institution after himself.

Some have questioned whether such projects align with pressing priorities for the Nigeria Police Force, which grapples with insufficient funding for critical operations, low morale among officers, and inadequate housing facilities.

This development comes amidst broader discussions on governance under President Bola Tinubu, who, since assuming office in 2023, has named six public institutions after himself. As Tinubu approaches his second year in office on May 29, 2025, Nigerians have noted the administration’s lack of significant economic or structural achievements, with many public projects raising eyebrows over their priorities and impact.
