Ghana’s President Mahama Makes First Official Visits To The Gambia, Senegal To Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama made his first official visit abroad since his inauguration, travelling to The Gambia and Senegal on Friday, January 17, 2025.

Upon his arrival at the Banjul International Airport, he was received by Gambian President Adama Barrow, who later hosted him at a state luncheon.

The two leaders engaged in a private meeting to discuss strengthening bilateral relations between their countries, highlighting their strong camaraderie.

After his engagements in Banjul, President Mahama travelled to Senegal, where he met with President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye at the Presidential Palace in Dakar, where the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.

The meeting focused on deepening cooperation in key sectors, including hydrocarbons, defence, security, education, health, and tourism. They also discussed regional security concerns, particularly in the Sahel and within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The two Heads of State underlined the excellent relations of friendship and cooperation uniting Senegal and Ghana, supported by a convergence of views on democracy, good governance and the defense of fundamental rights, the Presidency stated.

The Senegalese Presidency added that the visit was a step toward reinforcing their partnership to advance the development and prosperity of both nations. Senegal reiterated its commitment to fostering closer ties with Ghana in the spirit of African solidarity and integration.

Mahama was re-elected as Ghana’s president following the general elections held in December 2024, securing a second term in office. His inauguration on January 7, 2025, occurred in Accra and was attended by several West African leaders and representatives of regional organisations, including ECOWAS and the African Union.

In his inaugural address, Mahama stated that his administration plans to deepen regional cooperation and build stronger bilateral ties with neighbouring countries. He said Ghana would continue to play a key role in promoting peace, security, and economic growth in West Africa.

Ghana remains steadfast in its dedication to the principles of unity, democracy, and economic integration across our continent. In this new term, we will actively seek to strengthen partnerships with our neighbors to address shared challenges and unlock mutual opportunities, he stated.
