A tsunami warning has been issued for parts of Northern California and Oregon after a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the California coast.

The earthquake was reported to have occurred at 10:44 a.m. PT, approximately 60 miles southwest of Ferndale, California, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The tremor was felt across the region, prompting immediate alerts from the National Weather Service (NWS).

The tsunami warning extends to coastal areas in both California and Oregon, with potential impacts expected in cities including San Francisco, Crescent City, Fort Bragg, Port Orford, Brookings, and Charleston.

Residents in these areas are advised to stay alert and prepare for possible evacuations. With nearly 5 million people facing possible evacuation along parts of the Northern California and Oregon coastlines.

“Tsunami warnings mean that a tsunami with significant inundation is possible or is already occurring,” the NWS said in its advisory.

Tsunamis are a series of dangerous waves many hours after the initial arrival time. The first wave may not be the largest.
