Nigerian Army Illegally Detains Investigative Journalist Fisayo Soyombo

702

The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt has illegally detained Investigative journalist and Founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), Fisayo Soyombo, for three days. This was disclosed in an X post by FIJ.

Fisayo is known for his undercover work exposing corruption. He has previously infiltrated Nigeria’s criminal justice system by spending days in police custody and a prison cell to reveal systemic issues, including customs corruption.

His notable investigations include driving a ‘stolen’ vehicle through 86 checkpoints to highlight bribery within the Nigeria Police Force.

Earlier in September, Fisayo had raised an alarm of an imminent DSS operative’s plan to apprehend him once his whereabouts were confirmed.

While the exact reason for his planned arrest remains unclear, FIJ suspected it may be related to Soyombo’s work as an investigative journalist or his recent criticisms of the government on social media platform X.
