In collaboration with Ethiopian Airlines, the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) will operate direct flights from London Gatwick Airport to Kumasi Prempeh I International Airport, starting December 3, 2024. GACL announced the development in a statement on Thursday.

The inaugural flight will depart London Gatwick at 2:10 a.m. and arrive in Kumasi at 9:05 a.m. The return flight will leave Kumasi at 11:00 a.m., landing in London at 6:00 p.m.

A second flight is planned for December 15 to accommodate increased demand during the festive season, with further schedules to be announced in the coming weeks, according to the statement released.

This partnership is set to enhance international travel and boost connectivity between the Ashanti Regional capital and one of Europe’s busiest airports, as it provides a direct link for business travellers, tourists, and Ghanaians in the diaspora.

The development comes shortly after President Nana Akufo-Addo commissioned the 97-kilometre Tema-Mpakadan railway line, a transformative infrastructure project that marks the first phase of the Ghana-Burkina Faso Interconnectivity Project. Once fully extended, the railway will link Ouagadougou, the capital of landlocked Burkina Faso providing a vital trade route to the sea.

The launch of direct flights from London to Kumasi is a milestone in Ghana’s efforts to improve regional connectivity and economic growth. Coupled with transformative infrastructure projects like the Tema-Mpakadan railway, it positions Ghana as a hub for trade and travel in West Africa.
