The highly anticipated Christmas movie trailer by Nigerian filmmaker Jade Osiberu has been released. The film Christmas in Lagos, set to premiere on Prime Video on December 20, weaves together themes of love, self-discovery, and drama, capturing the vibrant energy of Christmas in Lagos.
Sharing the trailer on X, Osiberu said,
We set out to make a film that shows Lagos (and Naija) off in its full Detty December glory, and when the film is out in exactly a month from today, I think you guys will be proud of the film.
The film follows three intertwined stories. Fiyin (Teniola Aladese) struggles with heartbreak and starts to see her best friend, Elo (Shalom Obiago), as her potential soulmate. But her hopes are dashed when Elo returns from New York, ready to propose to his secret girlfriend, Yagazie (Angel Anosike).
In another storyline, Gbemi (Shaffy Bello), a 59-year-old woman, must choose between her longtime partner (Wale Ojo) and her high school sweetheart (Richard Mofe-Damijo), leading to heartfelt moments of reflection and decision-making.
Adding a touch of youthful exuberance, Ivie (Rayxia Ojo) returns to Lagos from London, dreaming of a wild “Detty December” experience. However, her plans unexpectedly turn when she meets Ajani (Ladipoe) and falls for her.
The film marks the final title under Osiberu’s exclusive deal with Prime Video following the platform’s sudden exit from the African market earlier this year. Speaking to Variety Magazine in an exclusive interview in August on the motivation behind the film, Osiberu said,
If we’re going to make a Christmas film, let’s make it the best, biggest, most exciting Christmas film we can make out of Nigeria. So when anybody sees this, they get a sense of what it’s like to spend Christmas in Lagos and want to be there as well.
The film boasts a star-studded cast and features appearances from Afrobeats sensations like Waje, Adekunle Gold, Ayra Starr, and Ladipoe, further highlighting its festive appeal. With its dynamic characters and vibrant storytelling, Christmas in Lagos promises to be a holiday treat that showcases Nigeria’s rich culture and festive spirit.
