Phoenix Fury Wins Best Film Award At 13th AFRIFF

In a landmark moment at the 13th edition of the African International Film Festival (AFRIFF),Nollywood’s “Phoenix Fury” won the prestigious Best Film award. Held on November 10, 2024, at the Oriental Hotel, the festival recognised the powerful film with a prize of ₦4.5 million

Phoenix Fury, directed by Ifeoma Nkiruka Chukwuogo, captivated audiences with its ambitious storytelling that bridges past and present through the journey of Ifeatu, a woman seeking revenge against Yali, a man who has deeply wronged her.

The film’s narrative unfolds across four distinct chapters, each following two central characters who reveal layers of generational trauma and resilience. With a blend of history and contemporary struggle, Chukwuogo’s direction brings to life a hauntingly beautiful portrayal of vengeance, identity, and survival.

Chukwuogo was also honoured with the Best Director award, recognising her creative vision in seamlessly shifting between two worlds within the film. Her work was praised for its cinematic elegance and for adding depth to Nollywood storytelling.

The film’s cast includes Ama K. Abebrese, Ijeoma Grace Agu, Adjetey Anang, Onyinye Odokoro, Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD), and Uzoamaka Aniunoh.

The festival also celebrated Uzoamaka Onuoha, who clinched the Best Female Performance in a Feature award for her role in “Agemo,” directed by Moshood Abiola Obatula. “Agemo” delves into a supernatural world where Agatha, the protagonist, confronts manipulation and power struggles that reflect real-world issues women face.
