Malian government, under the leadership of General Assimi Goïta, is in advance discussion to boost its healthcare infrastructure with a new hospital, including a radiotherapy centre for cancer treatment, following successful talks between Malian and Chinese officials.
According to reports, the agreement was reached during a meeting held on October 19, 2024, between Mali’s Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop and a Chinese delegation from Zhejiang province.
Led by Mr. Lin Jie, Deputy Director General of the Zhejiang Provincial Health Commission, the Chinese delegation engaged in positive discussions on strengthening Sino-Malian medical cooperation.
Xu Xiaoping, Head of the Chinese Medical Mission in Mali, was also at the discussion. The key outcome was a commitment to establish a radiotherapy centre at Mali Hospital, a significant step forward in the country’s ability to treat cancers domestically.
This agreement is part of broader efforts by Mali’s transitional government to forge “win-win” partnerships with international allies.
The planned radiotherapy centre is expected to be a game-changer for Mali’s healthcare system, significantly improving access to cancer treatment, which has long been challenging for the West African nation.
The partnership with Zhejiang province builds on ties between Mali and China, furthering collaboration in healthcare, infrastructure, and other strategic sectors.
Minister Abdoulaye Diop highlighted the importance of such partnerships for Mali’s development, noting that the talks with the Chinese delegation reflect Mali’s ongoing efforts to engage with diverse global partners to enhance its opportunities and address urgent needs.
Malian authorities continue to prioritise strategic cooperation with key nations, as demonstrated by their growing partnerships with China, which has already provided significant medical support to Mali over the years.
However, the timeline for constructing the new hospital and the radiotherapy centre has yet to be confirmed.
