Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team began their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory over New Zealand in their opening group match at the CFC Stadium on Monday.

The Nigerian side took control from the beginning, with Shakirat Moshood netting the first goal just two minutes into the match.

Khadijat Adegoke doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 13th minute, capitalising on a goalkeeping error from New Zealand’s Brooke Neary. Adegoke’s powerful shot slipped through Neary’s hands and set the tone for a dominant display.

Faridat Abdulwahab struck the third goal from outside the penalty area following a well-taken corner by Moshood in the 28 minute, moving Nigeria to a 3-0 lead within the first 30 minutes.

The second half saw more of the same, with Nigeria extending their lead to 4-0. Adegoke turned provider, delivering a pinpoint cross for Taiwo Afolabi, who headed the ball into the net in the 50th minute.

Despite being outplayed for much of the match, New Zealand managed a consolation goal, but Nigeria’s dominance was evident in the stats.

The Nigerians recorded 32 attempts on goal compared to New Zealand’s three, controlling possession and territory throughout the game.

Nigeria, who finished third in the last FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, will look to build on this strong start as they aim for another deep tournament run.

Their next match in the group stage against Ecuador on Saturday 19 October, will be a crucial match to forge ahead to the knockout rounds.
