Liberia’s Former UN Ambassador Sarah Fyneah Declines New Role Offer by President Boakai

292

Liberia’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Sarah Safyn Fyneah, has rejected an appointment from President Joseph Boakai after being recalled from her diplomatic position.

She was offered a new role as Policy Advisor Council and Global Campaign Coordinator/Special Envoy for Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

In her response to the president, Fyneah acknowledged receiving the letter of recall dated August 14, 2024, which followed a prior verbal communication from the Minister of Foreign Affairs on June 26, 2024.

She explained that her recall was related to her defence of diplomatic protocols concerning Liberia’s vote at the United Nations on December 12, 2023.

She emphasised that it is the duty of Foreign Service Officers to align their actions with the nation’s official policies, determined by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

She wrote in her letter that she declined as soon as she received the first communication from the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

She reaffirmed her commitment to her previous position as Ambassador and emphasised her leadership during Liberia’s campaign.

Fyneah described some difficulties she encountered throughout her service, such as inappropriate living conditions, despite expressing confidence in President Boakai’s administration following his victory in 2023.
