The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says it is yet to implement the recently approved increase in corps members’ monthly allowance from N33,000 to N77,000 due to a lack of funds.

Despite the government’s approval, effective July 2024, corps members received the old N33,000 stipend for September, leading to widespread disappointment.

Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, NYSC Director General, addressed the situation during an interview with BBC Hausa, explaining that while the government has approved the pay raise, the funds necessary for the increment have not been released.

Not only the corps members but even our staff members’ salary increase has been delayed for four to five months, Ahmed said.

He expressed hope that the funds would be released soon but did not provide a specific timeline for when the new allowance would be implemented.

The NYSC initially confirmed the pay raise in a statement, citing a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission dated September 25, 2024.

However, corps members remain in limbo while awaiting the long-promised N77,000 monthly allowance.
