APP Sweeps 22 Chairmanship Seats in Rivers LG Polls Amid Election Day Tensions

The Action Peoples Party (APP) has secured a resounding victory in the Rivers State local government elections, winning 22 of 23 chairmanship positions.

The Chief Election Officer of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, Justice Adolphus Enebeli, announced the results on Saturday in Port Harcourt.

However, the result for Etche Local Government Area remains pending, as collation is still ongoing.

Enebeli also noted that the results for the 319 councillorship seats, including Etche LGA, will be declared later.

The election day was marred by two explosions, both occurring on Saturday morning.

The Rivers State Police Command confirmed that the first blast hit the All Progressives Congress Secretariat along Aba Road. In contrast, the second targeted the Obio/Akpor Local Government Secretariat, just outside Port Harcourt.

West Africa Weekly earlier reported that Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, had warned the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and former governor turned FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, against the attempt to undermine the state’s local government election.

In a video posted on X, voters also accuse the Police of disrupting results collation in Port Harcourt.
