As Open Grazing Persists, SUV Rams into Cattle on Lagos Highway

An accident involving an Acura Sport Utility Vehicle collided with a herd of cattle, resulting in the death of two cows and substantial damage to the vehicle’s hood ( bonnet).

This was contained in a press statement issued by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, citing that the cows were crossing the highway at Iyana-Oworo, en route Ogudu area of Lagos State.

LASTMA officers, after clearing the Acura SUV (AAA 818 HV) from the road to facilitate smooth traffic flow, handed the vehicle over to the Police officers at Ogudu police station for further investigation,” the statement reads.

Similarly, along Ifako-Ijaye, an accident occurred involving an “unpainted” commercial Mazda bus (MUS 576 YJ) and a Korope mini-bus (FKJ 618).

At approximately 10:30 a.m. today, a regrettable accident occurred on the Ifako Bridge en route to the Ogudu area of Lagos,” the statement reads partly.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that the driver of the Mazda bus, distracted by eating while driving, lost concentration and subsequently lost control of the vehicle,” the statement added.

According to LASTMA, its officers responded “swiftly”, rescuing five injured passengers—one male and four females—in the Mazda mini-bus.

Meanwhile, the accident involving cows occurred 1-week after President Bola Tinubu’s Committee on the Implementation of Livestock Reforms persisted that open grazing should remain a practice for the next ten years.

The Committee’s Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, proposed a combination of ranching and open grazing to solve Nigeria’s farmer-herder clashes.
