Guinea’s Suspension From Francophonie Organisation Lifted After Three Years

223

The Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF) has lifted its sanctions on Guinea, which had been in place since 2021 following the military coup. The decision was announced in a press release Tuesday evening.

During OIF’s extraordinary session on Tuesday, OIF Secretary General Louise Mushikiwabo chaired the meeting that lifted Guinea’s suspension. While the organisation acknowledged that Guinea still needs to progress on human rights and freedoms, it expressed solidarity with the country by ending its suspension.

The OIF noted that the decision was influenced by a visit from the Secretary-General to Conakry in January, which helped assess Guinea’s challenges and progress.

The lifting of the suspension will allow Guinea to fully participate in the upcoming Francophonie summit in France on October 4 and 5.OIF is a multinational organisation that constitutes countries whose national language is French. It has 88 member states.
