FCT Primary School Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Arrears

204

Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have embarked on an indefinite strike following unmet demands from the area councils. This decision came after a 14-day ultimatum issued by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Chapter, expired without action from the six area councils.

The teachers are protesting the non-payment of 60 per cent of their minimum wage arrears, alongside other outstanding demands, including salary increments and unpaid allowances. According to media reports, the strike began on September 18, 2024 and pupils were sent home upon arrival at their schools.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike reportedly settled 40 per cent of the wage arrears, however, the area councils have not fully met the union’s demands. Comrade Abdullahi Shafa, the FCT NUT Chairman, warned that the strike would continue until all entitlements were paid. He said further actions, including protests and solidarity from secondary school teachers, might follow if the situation remains unresolved.
