Ghana’s NDC Party Protests Irregularities With Voters Register

34

Ghana’s opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), on Tuesday held a nationwide protest against the electoral commission over alleged irregularities with the voter register.

According to JoyOnline, the NDC party insisted that “there are several irregularities that cannot provide the country a free, fair, and credible election.”

The party also demanded an independent forensic audit ahead of the December 7 elections to elect a successor to President Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

However, the demand came after the electoral commission admitted transferring illegal votes in the Pusiga District of the Upper East Region.

While the electoral commission claimed to have corrected the irregularities raised by the NDC, it denied the party’s request to show evidence by issuing them a copy of the corrected provisional register.

When asked the reason for the protests, Karl Owuompesika, during an interview with Reuters Africa, said:

For us to have an exclusive, very well-planned register, that we know we are going to an election so that when we win, we know we’ve won. But when we lose, we’ll also admit we’ve lost.

Meanwhile, the slated election in December will be contested between ex-president John Dramani Mahama of the NDC and current Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party.
