Maiduguri Flood: Borno Governor Says Boko Haram Terrorists May Have Escaped From Prison

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has expressed concern that Boko Haram terrorists may have escaped from the Maiduguri correctional centre following severe flooding. The flood, caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam, displaced over 400,000 people and killed more than 30. The Alau Dam had not been properly maintained, hence the avoidable collapse.

In an interview with BBC News, Zulum said the flood affected over two million people, and his government provides humanitarian aid. When asked about the possibility of Boko Haram insurgents escaping from the correctional centre, Zulum said he was worried.

I’m worried. Yes, I’m seriously worried. But you also have to bear in mind that the Borno State Government has established what we call the Borno model of rehabilitation, which has allowed many insurgents to repent, he claimed.

Borno state, however, has a population of about 1.8 million displaced persons and is reportedly the epicentre of Boko Haram terrorism. The state government began shutting down IDP camps in Maiduguri in 2021, forcing many to leave without adequate consultation or alternatives. Till date, the terrorist group continues to pose a serious threat to civilians in Borno state.
