The Confederation of Peoples of the Alliance of Sahel States (CP-AES) will officially launch on September 16, 2024, in Bamako, Mali.

Speaking to Burkina24, the rapporteur of the CP-AES, Abdoulaye Nabaloum, said the confederation will provide a platform for people in the three AES countries (Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso) to actively support their leaders’ goals of achieving sovereignty and independence.

Nabaloum noted that previous efforts by African leaders for an African confederation failed due to lack of popular support, and that the CP-AES seeks to correct this by involving civil societies and citizens in shaping the future of the Sahel states.

He criticised the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for failing to represent the interests of the people, which has led to the creation of the CP-AES as a more people-focused initiative.

“Experience has shown us that with ECOWAS, it has not behaved at all like an ECOWAS of the people. So the confederation that was created for these three States is an opportunity for us the people to be able to support them,” Nabaloum said.

He added that CP-AES will work closely with the governments of AES countries to communicate important policies to the public and ensure they are effectively implemented. He added that anyone who shares the AES vision is invited to join the CP-AES.
