South Africa To Submit Genocidal ‘Facts and Evidence’ Against Israel At ICJ

South Africa has announced its intention to submit a memorial document to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on October 28 to provide evidence that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

This was disclosed on Tuesday by Vincent Magwenya, spokesperson to President Cyril Ramaphosa, reaffirming the country’s resilience to ensuring justice since the initial filing against Israel in December 2023, where it accused Israel of breaching its obligations under the Genocide Convention due to its military actions in Gaza following the October 7 resistance.

“The deliberate denial of medicine, fuel, food and water to the residents of Gaza is tantamount to genocide,” President Ramaphosa asserted while addressing the Extraordinary Joint Meeting of BRICS and other invited leaders on the situation in the Middle East.

For South Africa, the memorial serves as a comprehensive case against Israel’s alleged acts of genocide against the Palestinians, detailing legal arguments, evidence, and facts supporting the allegations for possible prosecution.

South Africa will be filing its memorial to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) next month ( October 2024). South Africa intends to provide facts and evidence to prove that Israel is committing the crime of genocide in Palestine,” the statement reads partly.

Meanwhile, the ICJ has previously denied South Africa’s request for an extension on submitting evidence, indicating a strict adherence to procedural timelines, which might influence how South Africa prepares its memorial.

This development signifies South Africa’s resilience in pursuing justice through the ICJ, aiming to hold Israel accountable for what it described as genocidal acts in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
