Updated: Police Clash with Arbaeen Mourners in Abuja, 4 Reported Dead

The Nigerian Police attacked the Arbaeen Symbolic Trek with teargas and gunshots in Wuse District, Abuja, today. Ealier reports suggest that one person has been shot dead during the unrest.

The protests are said to be connected to the annual Arba’een Symbolic Trek, an event marked by Shia Muslims worldwide in memory of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein.

Videos circulating on social media platform X show chaotic scenes, with the sound of gunshots as protesters flee the area.

Responding to the details of the clash the FCT Police Command has released a statement:

”The FCT police command wishes to confirm an unprovoked attack by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as the ‘Shi’ite’ group, on some personnel of the Nigeria Police Force attached to FCT command at Wuse Junction by traffic light, where two (2) police personnel were killed, three left unconscious in the hospital, and three (3) Police patrol vehicles set ablaze,” the statement reads.

The statement also mentioned that several arrests has been made by the police.
