Just In: Days After Condemning Killing of Peaceful Protesters, Police Summon NLC President Over ‘Terrorism Financing, Subversion, Cybercrime’

The Nigeria Police Force has summoned Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), for questioning. This is over allegations including terrorism financing, treasonable felony, criminal conspiracy, subversion, and cybercrime.

The Intelligence Response Team (IRT) issued the invitation under the Deputy Commissioner of Police and signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Adamu Muazu. The letter, dated August 19, 2024, instructed Ajaero to appear at the IRT office in Abuja on Tuesday, August 20, at 10:00 a.m. The police warned that failure to comply with the invitation would result in issuing a warrant for his arrest.

The letter stated,

“This office is investigating a case of Criminal Conspiracy, Terrorism Financing, Treasonable Felony, Subversion, and Cybercrime in which you have been implicated. You are therefore required to report to the undersigned for an interview on Tuesday, 20th August 2024, at 10:00 hrs prompt… in connection with the above investigation”.

This development came shortly after the NLC headquarters in Abuja were reportedly raided by security operatives. Earlier that day, the NLC had issued a communique condemning the killing of peaceful protesters and calling for an investigation into the massacre. The President and the General Secretary of the NLC, Emmanuel Ugboaja, had signed the communique.

Ajaero and other labour leaders have not yet publicly responded to the allegations.
