Lagos Environmental Corps Seizes ₦2m Worth of Styrofoam Packs Bound for Cameroon

The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has intercepted a truckload of Styrofoam packs in transit within Lagos State. The truck, a Mercedes-Benz 814, was stopped in the Ojuelegba area en route to Cameroon, where the Styrofoam packs were intended for sale.

The LAGESC Surulere division carried out this operation following a tip-off about the movement of the styrofoam packs within Lagos. The Corps revealed that the truckload of Styrofoam packs, valued at ₦2,090,000, was sold by Iya Ireti Plastic Company, a business located on Lagos Island. The company had sold the banned items to a Cameroonian national to transport them through Akwa Ibom State for distribution in Cameroon.

Reacting to the situation via a weekend statement, the Corps Marshal of LAGESC, Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (rtd), stated:

You would recall that in January, the State Government, via the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, announced the carpet ban on the use and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics across the State in which adequate publicity and stakeholder engagement was deplored to spread the word but some negative elements decided to withhold these inflammable products in their warehouses beyond the deadline.

The Lagos State Government implemented the ban on Styrofoam and other single-use plastics in January through the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources. It was reportedly part of the State’s efforts to curb environmental pollution and reduce the risks of using these materials. Abia and Oyo State also followed suit in banning Styrofoam packs.
