The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has said it is investigating a woman who was filmed tearing her husband’s passport at Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. The woman, Favour Igiebor, was seen in a viral video destroying the Nigerian Standard Passport shortly after arriving at the airport with her husband and children.

Kenneth Udo, the NIS spokesperson, confirmed the investigation in a statement released on Sunday. He stated that the actions of Mrs Igiebor could constitute a violation of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015, which prohibits the willful destruction of Nigerian travel documents. If the allegations are substantiated, she could face penalties as outlined in Section 10(h) of the same Act.

The incident occurred on Saturday, August 10, and has sparked widespread public interest and concern. In the video, Mrs Igiebor unapologetically admits to tearing the passport, stating, “Na me tear am” (I’m the one who tore it).

Despite her admission, she was allowed to leave the airport without any immediate consequences. Eyewitnesses reported that NIS personnel were present but did not intervene during the incident.

Following the destruction of the passport, Mrs Igiebor took her two children and left her husband, who appeared shocked and speechless. She was heard telling him, “Bring my children out for me. If you want to sleep there, you sleep there. This is Nigeria. Na here you dey”.

The video showed Nigerian Customs officials advising the husband to remain calm and not to react. Public reactions to the incident have been mixed, with many expressing outrage at the woman’s actions and NIS officials’ apparent lack of intervention. In response, the Comptroller General of Immigration, K.N. Nandap, has directed that Mrs Igiebor be invited for further questioning.
