The Lagos Commissioner of Police, Fayoade Adegoke, has threatened to stop protests in the state by applying “the full weight of the law”.
He said any further protests in the state would be “unlawful and illegal.
The CP alleged that some organisers he failed to identify had cancelled the protest; hence, there should be no gathering in any part of Lagos. However, actual protest organisers in Lagos said they would continue their demonstration on Monday.
The organisers stated this in a statement signed by Hassan Taiwo, Ayoyinka Oni and Adegboyega Adeniji on behalf of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria Organising Committee, Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota, Lagos State.
While the CP noted that the suspension of the protest was motivated by President Bola Tinubu’s Sunday broadcast, the identified organisers said that the president’s speech was late and uninspiring.
West Africa Weekly reported that pro-government hoodlums attacked protesters in the Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota, Lagos State, while security personnel watched.
The ongoing nationwide protests against hunger, corruption, and economic hardships have been characterised by violence due to the conduct of pro-government counter-protesters and unprofessional security personnel.
