President Bola Tinubu has ordered an end to all protests and demonstrations, ignoring the demands of the #EndBadGovernance protesters. He gave the order in a televised speech on Sunday.

The ongoing nationwide protests against hunger, corruption, and economic hardships have been characterised by violence due to the conduct of pro-government counter-protesters and unprofessional security personnel.

In Abuja, Kaduna, and Kano, security agents opened fire on peaceful protesters, while in Lagos, pro-government hoodlums attacked peaceful protesters.

West Africa Weekly reported that the protesters’ demands include the return of fuel subsidies, living wage implementation, electoral and judicial reforms, and the immediate release of #EndSARS protesters.

He admitted that the protesters “were young Nigerians who desired a better and more progressive country where their dreams, hopes, and personal aspirations would be fulfilled.” He also briefly acknowledged the killing in “Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna and other states” even though the Police had earlier denied such killings.

Rather than address these demands, President Tinubu boasted of his ‘achievements’ and ordered protesters off the streets.

“I hereby enjoin protesters and the organisers to suspend any further protest and create room for dialogue, which I have always acceded to at the slightest opportunity,” he said.
