Police Arrest Journalists and 31 Protesters at Designated Protest Ground in Abuja

506

The Police have taken at least 31 protesters and journalists into custody from the protest ground in  Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, despite being declared the approved place for the #EndBadGovernance protests.

According to News Central, the police targeted some of the protest conveners who had earlier been denied access to Eagle Square, forcing the use of the MKO Abiola National Stadium as their meeting point.

Recall the FCT authorities had obtained a court ruling that limited the protests to the stadium. Indeed, early into the day, the protesters kept off the venue.

At about 11 am, however, they started regrouping after an aggravated police response of gunshots and teargas against them.

Not only were demonstrators arrested, but several journalists were also taken into custody despite identifying themselves. The police are also ordering protesters to leave the premises immediately.

It was reported earlier that the Department of State Services (DSS) is reportedly ramping up its efforts to suppress the #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria.
