Nigeria U18 women’s basketball team, known as the Young D’Tigress, delivered a resounding performance on Friday, with a 90-9 victory over Liberia in their FIBA U18 AfroBasket qualification clash held in Abidjan.

This match is part of the ongoing regional tournament from July 31 to August 4.

Nigeria’s victory shows their readiness to secure the sole ticket to the 2024 FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket championship, which will take place later this month in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The team’s impressive display has set a high bar as they focus on their upcoming game against the host nation, Côte d’Ivoire.

Côte d’Ivoire, with a history of earning two silver medals in five appearances at the U18 championship, is eager to return to the podium for the first time since 2014.

Leveraging their home advantage, they would seek victory over Nigeria and Liberia to clinch the coveted spot in the tournament’s final round.

For Nigeria, the stakes are high as they aim to make a significant comeback to the U18 championship. Having previously reached the final rounds in 2008 and 2010, where they won a silver medal, the Young D’Tigress are working towards reclaiming their place in the competition after a long absence since 2010.
