The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed the immediate reactivation of lines restricted because of NIN-SIM verification issues over the weekend.

This move is intended to provide affected consumers with a limited period to properly link their National Identification Number (NIN) to their Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards.

The NCC urged all members of the public who have not yet verified their SIMs to do so promptly to maintain uninterrupted access to their lines.

The directive follows reports of widespread discontent across various states in Nigeria, where aggrieved customers have expressed their frustration over telecommunications companies blocking their SIM cards.

Early this morning, large crowds of disgruntled customers gathered outside MTN offices in multiple locations, including Osogbo, Festac in Lagos State, Uyo in Akwa Ibom State, Ikeja’s Toyin Roundabout in Lagos State, Warri, FHA Lugbe in Abuja, and Idi Ape in Ibadan, Oyo State. These customers demanded an immediate resolution to the NIN-SIM linkage issues that had resulted in the deactivation of their SIM cards.

Videos and reports circulating on social media show crowds at different telco offices, with customers insisting on swift action from the telecommunications providers.

The NCC’s directive to temporarily reactivate affected lines is a measure to ease the tension and allow subscribers additional time to comply with the NIN-SIM linkage requirements.

The telecommunications action is coming a few days before the #EndBadGovernance nationwide peaceful protest, which many view as an attempt to sabotage the planned protests.
