Alban Uzoma Nwapa, widely known as Dr Alban, the Nigerian-born Swedish musician and producer who performed the hit “It’s My Life,” has been elected into the European Hall of Fame.

He sold an estimated 16 million records worldwide. His 1992 hit single saw him top the charts in Israel, Austria, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Germany.

Besides his musical career, Dr Alban founded his music label, Dr Records, further showing his influence in the music world. His induction into the European Hall of Fame is a testament to his contributions and success.

Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi took to X to congratulate Dr Alban on his recent feat.

Obi indicated that he was elated by the feat the musician pulled as he recognised the creative power in Nigerians, especially young citizens.

“His success story aligns with my firm belief in the creative power of Nigerians, especially the youths who, when given the right training and opportunities, always excel in many areas with their infinite endowment of talents and skills.” Obi wrote.

He called for relevant training and other opportunities that would make the youths of Nigeria great in their chosen careers, be it academics, science and technology, sports, entertainment, arts, or music.

Obi’s speech belied what he firmly believed—the potential of the Nigerian youth—in the sense that their talents are called out not for recognition and exposure to the global stage but groomed.

The induction of Dr Alban into the Hall of Fame in Europe is not just a testament to his greatness but also brings to mind some exceptional talents that have emerged from Nigeria.

While the country continues to throw up world-class individuals across various fields, a story such as Dr Alban’s only further strengthens the need to invest in youth and create an enabling environment for them to bloom.

Dr Alban had been one of those rare artists who left a mark on music history. Breaking into the music industry in the late days of the early 1990s, he has since continued influencing and inspiring artists worldwide. Deservedly, he was inducted into the European Hall of Fame for his everlasting impact and success.
