The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Cross River/Akwa Ibom Command has auctioned 26,625 litres of seized petrol to the public. This is according to the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Controller H.K. Ejibunu, who announced the auction in Calabar on Monday.

The seized petrol, which was intercepted five days ago, was auctioned at a discounted rate of N9000 per 25-litre keg. The petrol had been smuggled in 1,065 kegs, with a duty-paid value of N40,054,125. The kegs were seized across various locations, including Agbalagba-Ikom, Akansoko Road, and Ikom-Ogoja Road.

According to Ejibunu, the seizure followed recent interceptions in zones A and B, covering Lagos and Kebbi states. The operation was coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser and the NCS, in collaboration with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority. The auction was reportedly approved by the Controller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi.

Ejibunu stated that the NCS will continue to target petrol smuggling activities and enforce the law against those involved.

He said: “We will continue to go after them as economic saboteurs, as there’s no place for their illegal activities.”
