Dapo Abiodun: Nigeria’s ‘Best Governor’ Dragged By His People Over Bad Roads

1.2k

Residents of Ogun State have called out Governor Dapo Abiodun on X over poor roads that litter the state.

They post pictures and videos of terrible, non-motorable roads with the hashtag #DapoFixOgunRoad.

Based on the numerous videos posted, floods have taken some of the roads, subjecting motorists to untold hardship. Some cannot be navigated with cars at all but with motorcycles.

The bad roads cut across virtually all the 20 local governments in the state. However, LGAs such as Ado-Odo/Ota, Ewekoro, Ifo, Abeokuta North and Obafemi Owode feature more.

@hauwaAllabura, an X-user, called out the governor, joined by other X users who reside in the state, all trending the hashtag #DapoFixOgunRoad.

This call-out is coming months after multiple media organisations decorated Governor Abiodun as ‘the Best Governor‘ of the year 2023.

The awards include Silver Bird’s ‘Man of the Year’, SUN Newspaper Governor of the Year, and Independent Newspapers Governor of the Year (Tech Innovation) award.

The management of Silver Bird Television said Abiodun was bestowed the coveted award for his “immense contributions” to the advancement of the Nigerian society “through (his) many laudable projects.”

Recall that Abiodun was elected the Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, and the Anambra State governor, Prof Charles Soludo, emerged as the Vice Chairman of the forum. The Southern Governors’ Forum is the umbrella body for the 17 governors from Nigeria’s South-West, South-South, and South-East geopolitical zones.

Ogun State generates the fourth-highest Internally Generated Revenue after Lagos, Rivers and FCT. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the gateway state recorded N120.6bn as IGR in 2022.

According to residents of the state, the condition of the road network in Ogun erodes its economic development. Bad road networks are always at the core of stunted business growth and logistical challenges for companies located in such vicinity. They call on the government to improve road network maintenance across the state.

Residents also noted that frequent breakdowns of vehicles are primarily due to the dilapidated condition of the roads. Moreover, bad road conditions are a cause of a lot of security risks between ways to and from work.
