With a sterling performance, the Ghana U-19 men’s volleyball team grabbed the silver medal at the just-ended 2024 U-19 Nations Volleyball Championship in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
The team, led by their coach, Seidu Ajanako, lost the final game to Sierra Leone in two straight sets, ending 21-13 and 21-11.

Despite this defeat, the team qualified for the 2024 Volleyball World Championship scheduled in China—an upset especially for the young ones.

Their campaign got underway with a victory over the DR Congo—the team winning it in three sets. Though they lost 21-13 and 21-18 at the hands of Namibia, they made it into the quarterfinals.

Ghana avenged their earlier defeat in a thrilling rematch by always coming from behind to beat Namibia in straight sets, 22-20, 25-23.

The team continued in fine form with another hard-fought victory over DR Congo in the semis, 22-20, 21-18, to book a place in the finals. Though they fell to Sierra Leone in the final in a one-sided match, 21-13, 21-11, the Ghanaian team showed so much promise and talent.

Some outstanding key players included the blocker Emmanuel Abbey and Ebenezer Anyetei, a defender.

The delegation was led by the President of the Ghana Volleyball Association, Mr George Tettey, who was assisted by an Executive Board Member, Mr Mohammed Aputeog.

Some other senior members who supported the team at the tournament included Kelvin Carboo, Phillip Amissah, and Emmanuel Adamitey.

Aputeog commended the team’s achievements; “We could’ve won gold but for their inexperience. It’s their first time competing on the national level.” He also talked about their preparedness for the China World Championship, promising more funding and support.
