Sean “Diddy” Combs has returned his symbolic key to New York City after Mayor Eric Adams announced a committee’s recommendation to nullify and rescind it.
Combs was asked to return the key after CNN obtained video footage showing him physically assaulting his then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura in 2016. Mayor Adams, in a June 4 letter to Combs, expressed being “deeply disturbed” by the video and condemned the actions depicted, affirming his support for survivors of domestic and gender-based violence.
Following internal deliberations, the Key to the City of New York committee recommended nullifying and rescission Combs’ key. Combs, who had apologised for his actions in the video, was awarded the key in September 2023 for his significant public service and contributions to the common good.
The key was returned to the city on June 10, according to City Hall. CNN has reached out to Combs’ representatives for comment.
Since November, Combs has faced eight civil lawsuits, seven of which accuse him of sexual assault. One lawsuit, filed by former girlfriend Ventura, has been settled. Another lawsuit accuses his son Christian Combs of sexual assault, with Sean Combs being implicated in aiding and abetting.
While Combs has vehemently denied many of the allegations, he has not responded to all claims. In December 2023, after four lawsuits had been filed, Combs posted a denial on social media, describing the allegations as “sickening” and driven by accusers seeking a “quick payday.”
Federal investigators are reportedly preparing to bring accusers of Combs before a federal grand jury, signalling a potential indictment by the US Justice Department. This move marks a significant escalation in the ongoing investigation involving the music producer and Bad Boy Records founder.
