In a recent interview on Arise TV’s Prime Time program, former Anambra State governor and Labour Party Presidential Candidate Peter Obi offered a scathing assessment of President Bola Tinubu’s first year in office.

Speaking with host Charles Aniagolu, Obi criticised Tinubu for continuing the policies of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, which he claims have further deteriorated Nigeria’s economy.

“I think he has kept to his campaign promises to continue from where Buhari stopped,”

He detailed how Tinubu’s administration has exacerbated food inflation, citing examples of staple foods like rice, beans, yam and garri, energy prices, and increased national debt.

Tinubu has destroyed the Nigerian economy, leaving it far behind other African countries we once outperformed, he added.

Obi used a vivid analogy to describe the nation’s current state, comparing it to a turbulent flight.

When the pilot says we will experience a bit of turbulence, it’s not the time for people to be moving around in the plane and serving champagne, he said, implying that the government’s priorities are misplaced.

Highlighting the dire situation faced by many Nigerians, Obi pointed out, “I can assure you today that if we announce that we are going to feed only women, men will dress as women and turn to Bobrisky because we are all hungry.”

Obi also addressed rumours of internal strife within the Labour Party, asserting his leadership and downplaying any reported conflicts.

I remain the leader of the Labour Party, and there’s no crisis within the party. When a father resolves a family issue, he keeps it a private matter, he stated.

Reacting to questions on his tenure as governor, Obi contrasted his achievements with the promises made by the current Anambra State governor, Charles Soludo.

“I didn’t promise Ndi Anambra Dubai-Taiwan. I promised education healthcare, and I delivered on all my campaign promises to Ndi Anambra,” he asserted. Obi then challenged Soludo to fulfil his ambitious promises, “My elder brother Soludo should make Anambra Dubai-Taiwan, just like he promised.”

Obi also questioned the nature of Nigeria’s current government. “Democracy is supposed to be government of the people, for the people and by the people. So the question is, is this government for the people?” he asked rhetorically.
