Afenifere Wants Abolition Of 774 Local Governments

843

The Pan Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has called for the abolition of all 774 local government councils in Nigeria.

The group demanded a constitutional amendment allowing states to create and manage local councils independently.

This was contained in a communiqué issued after the group’s National Caucus meeting held at the Lagos residence of its leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo.

In the communique, signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Prince Justice Faloye, Afenifere expressed concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s lack of commitment to restructuring the nation since spending one year in office.

The group criticised the federal government’s lawsuit against the 36 states regarding local government autonomy, describing it as a distraction that would be ineffective without constitutional amendments.

“Afenifere maintains that the only remedy to this profound injustice is to remove the list of local governments from the constitution and permit states to establish their local governments,” the communiqué stated.

“This recommendation aligns with the proposals from the 2014 National Conference and the 2018 El-Rufai Committee on Federalism. The time for a comprehensive restructuring of the Nigerian Federation is now,” it concluded.
