Strike: NLC, PASAN Cuts Water Supply To National Assembly

228

The water supply to the National Assembly complex has been cut by members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). The action of this group is in support of an ongoing indefinite strike declared by organised labour comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).

In addition to the water supply cut, PASAN members also blocked the entrance and exit gates of the National Assembly with two buses, effectively shutting down the complex. This action is part of a broader strike protesting the Federal Government’s offer of a N60,000 minimum wage, which labour groups have rejected.

Attempts to resolve the industrial action failed on Sunday, as a meeting between the National Assembly leadership and labour representatives ended in a deadlock. The organised labour, led by NLC President Joe Ajaero, demanded a minimum wage of N494,000. They have stated they will consult with their affiliate members before making any decisions and have asked the National Assembly to await their feedback.

The ongoing strike has also affected other institutions, including banks, schools, and airports, disrupting various sectors of both government and private enterprises. Earlier, the National Assembly complex, which houses the Senate and the House of Representatives, had its electricity supply cut as part of the strike actions.
