Breaking: Tribunal Confirms Ododo as Kogi Governor, Rejects Ajaka’s Petition

590

The Kogi State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has confirmed Usman Ododo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the duly elected Governor of Kogi State.

This decision followed the dismissal of the petition filed by Muritala Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), challenging Ododo’s victory.

The tribunal, chaired by Justice Ado Birnin-Kudu, ruled that Ajaka and the SDP failed to substantiate their claims against the election results.

Birnin-Kudu emphasised that the election, held on November 11, 2023, was conducted in substantial compliance with the Electoral Act.

Recall, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Ododo the winner of the governorship election, after he secured 446,237 votes. Ajaka, his closest rival, garnered 259,052 votes, while Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) obtained 46,362 votes.

However, there were allegations by opposition parties of electoral irregularities during the electioneering process, leading to the petition by the SDP candidate.
