The European Union Council under the European Peace Facility has announced its adoption of the sum of €15 million to be given to the Armed Forces of Côte d’Ivoire.

In a press release on Monday, the EU Council’s proposed support to the Ivorian Armed Forces will provide non-lethal equipment “to upgrade the intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities of the Air Forces of Côte d’Ivoire,” the report reads partly.

The report further reads,

The provision will also strengthen the logistics and security of military units deployed in the northern areas of Côte d’Ivoire through the provision of multi-purpose vehicles and personal protective equipment.

The delivery of the equipment will be accompanied by relevant tactical and on-the-job training, as appropriate, to ensure the full effectiveness of the support and draw the maximum benefit from it, the report reads.

Essentially, the European Peace Facility, established in 2021 to finance all Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) actions in military and defence matters, including regional and international organisations, has come to fulfil its aim of enhancing security in Côte d’Ivoire.

According to the EU evaluation of EPF support to conflict or war-torn regions, between 2022 and 2024, the EU mobilised €11.1 billion to support the Ukrainian armed forces, with Côte d’Ivoire benefitting from the newly proposed €15 million in defence support.
