Eight months after the tragic accident that claimed the life of Dr Vwaere Diaso, a medical professional at the General Hospital in Odan, Lagos State, due to the failure of an elevator at the hospital premises, the facility remain unfixed.

FIJ confirmed that the elevator responsible for the fatal accident remains unfixed, leaving workers and residents of the 10-storey building to rely solely on using stairs since August 2023.

A recent visit to the hospital by FIJ revealed that the elevator area has been cordoned off with a wooden structure adorned with a signpost bearing the logo of the Lagos State Government.

The signpost, adorned with phrases like “Restricted Area,” “Construction Site,” and “No Unauthorized Access,” also displayed a phone number associated with the Lagos Safety Commission upon search.

Despite the conspicuous absence of workers or machinery, a large logo of Julius Berger was prominently displayed close to the entrance of the doctors’ quarters.

Additionally, a signpost nearby indicated Julius Berger as the contractor responsible for the “Rehabilitation Works at Doctor’s Quarters General Hospital Odan Lagos,” spanning 32 weeks from February 2024 to September 2024.

Speaking to FIJ, a female hospital staff member residing in the building expressed uncertainty regarding the timeline for fixing the elevator.

They haven’t fixed it. It’s been sealed for some time now. And we have no idea when it will be fixed – she lamented.

The prolonged closure of the elevator area raises concerns among hospital workers and residents about safety and accessibility within the building.

With no definitive repair timeline, individuals grapple with the inconvenience and potential risks of the absence of proper elevator functionality.
