FG Declares Additional Public Holiday for Eid-el-Fitr Celebration

Federal Government of Nigeria has announced Thursday, April 11, 2024 as an additional public holiday to commemorate  Eid-el-Fitr.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced Thursday, April 11, 2024, as an additional public holiday to commemorate Eid-el-Fitr.

This announcement was conveyed in a statement issued by Dr. Aishetu Ndayako, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, shared via the ministry’s X handle today.

According to the statement, the decision to declare April 11 a public holiday was made in recognition of Eid-el-Fitr’s significance to the Muslim Ummah.

Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, congratulated the Muslim community for completing Ramadan, a month marked by spiritual reflection and devotion.

The declaration follows reports from Saudi Arabia on Monday confirming that the crescent of Shawwal, signalling the end of Ramadan, had not been sighted. Consequently, fasting continued on Tuesday in observance of the holy month.

Furthermore, Saudi authorities announced that Eid-el-Fitr would be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10, marking the beginning of the new Islamic month.

This aligns with the earlier declaration by the Federal Government, which had designated Tuesday and Wednesday, April 9 and 10, 2024, as public holidays in honour of the Eid-el-Fitr festivities.
