Rigobert Song, the head coach of the Cameroon national football team, has announced his departure from his role. The news was confirmed by Samuel Eto’o,  President of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot).

Song, revered as a former captain of the Indomitable Lions, has steered the national team for nearly two years. However, following Cameroon’s disappointing elimination in the round of 16 by Nigeria during the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosted in Côte d’Ivoire, it became evident that changes were necessary.

Samuel Eto’o, as Fecafoot’s president, acknowledged Song’s significant contributions to the team. Nevertheless, he lamented the failure of the team to meet its objectives under Song’s leadership. Consequently, the executive committee of Fecafoot has decided not to renew Song’s contract.

This decision to part ways with Song was followed by a formal letter from the Ministry of Sports, dated February 28, which explicitly indicated the non-renewal of Song’s contract.

Minister Narcisse Mouelle Kombi elucidated that it was untenable for the state, as the provider of Song’s remuneration, to sustain his role as manager and head coach of the Indomitable Lions.
