Nigeria Travel Advisory Level At High Risk

The Nigeria Travel Advisory (NTA) on Tuesday, 26 December 2023 at 08:27 AM ranks Nigeria with a 3.8 warning index considered to be dangerous for travel and it strongly advised to reconsider the need to travel to Nigeria as they detected travel advisories from 8 different sources for Nigeria.

As the local and regional situation reads 3.8 out of 5, the Nigeria Travel Advisory recommends reconsideration of the need to travel to Nigeria. Nigeria shares a land border with 4 neighbouring countries. For this region of countries (including Nigeria), the Advisory Index is 3.8 (average value over all countries). All countries have some reported advisories: Niger (4.8), Chad (3.7), Benin with 3.3 and Cameroon with 3.2 (of 5).

While Cameroon and Benin are advised to travel with high caution, Chad and Nigeria are advised to be reconsidered on a need to travel to, leaving Niger on the highest risk alert warning “Do not travel”.

With Nigeria having a 3.8 of 5 risk level, it is considered dangerous to travel to at level 4.

The eight sources outlined by the NTA are New Zealand, stating advisory to avoid non-essential travel elsewhere in Nigeria, including Abuja, (except the cities of Calabar and Lagos), due to the threat from terrorism, kidnapping, and violent crime.

Also, as issued by the New Zealand government to Nigeria and potential visitors, their warning info reads, “Do not travel to the states of Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, Plateau, Rivers (including Port Harcourt and Bonny Island), the river areas of Cross River state, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara. This is an ongoing significant threat of terrorism and a very high threat of kidnapping, localized conflict, and armed attacks in these areas. The security situation is volatile. If you are in one of these areas you should consider departing as soon as it is safe to do so. (Level 4 of 4).”

While Canada, Finland and Germany advised on traveling with caution, Australia and United States advised to reconsider traveling.

However, this is regional information covering specific areas of Nigeria. it is worth noting that regional crisis rises from concerns of insecurities ranging from ethnic or religious clashes, banditry, kidnappings and terrorism.
